BETA originally brought together riding organizations, physicians, riders, manufacturers and retailers to develop the now widely recognized BETA Body Protector Standard.

 

 

The 2018 Body Protector Standard meets all the requirements of the respective European standard (EN 13158). A revised edition of the BETA standard was published in 2018 and adopted by BETA as the new BETA standard.

 

 

In terms of performance, there is no difference in the amount of protection provided by the 2009 and 2018 versions. The 2009 version was no longer produced at the end of 2018 and some disciplines and equestrian organizations will no longer recognize and accept it as of January 2024. 

 

 

Because the rules must apply to all garments with the same label, it was decided to withdraw approval for the older version of the standard because of the possible age that some of the oldest garments worn may have reached - up to 13 years old.

 

 

Garments labeled 2009 and purchased new could be used for hacking and many other activities that do not require the later version.

 

 

According to BETA standards, garments are also retested annually for consistency in the quality of materials and manufacturing processes used. If you want to buy a new body protector now, we recommend looking for apparel with the 2018 label.
